Throughout my academic career, Microsoft Word has been my primary word processing software. The first iteration I used for assignments in middle school was MS Word '97, which was the preferred version of my great-aunt. I enrolled in an elective course in high school just to become certified in all Microsoft applications. Microsoft word is an extremely powerful tool with a litany of useful functions. However, as my academic interest have become more research-oriented, I have started to develop a preference for LaTeX over traditional word processors. LaTeX offers more adaptability, consistency, and precision. This is especially true when writing for academic journals, managing references, or incorporating mathematical notation.
Among the ISTE Standards for Educators, the standard that resonates the most with me is the idea being a learner. This standard emphasizes that educators should continually improve their practice by learning from and with others and by staying current with emerging technologies. Educators have the ability to model curiosity and growth for their students, rather than attempting to act solely as experts. Teaching is an ongoing process, not a fixed set of skills, therefore we have a responsibility to evolve and adapt to changing times to achieve positive learning outcomes.
I am skeptical of the label digital native when applied broadly to today’s youth. While it generally refers to individuals who have grown up surrounded by digital technologies, the term can underestimate significant differences in access, skill level, and critical understanding of technology. In my own experience, I have noticed clear contrasts between how many of my peers use technology and how many of my teachers, often described as digital immigrants, approach it. In this case, when teachers are too careful and do not understand the power of the software their using, these differences can affect my learning experience. I anticipate that my future students will be more efficient with digital tools than me. I will have to adapt my processes regularly to create a more efficient learning environment.
